Born into the mistborn tribe, Xa’kiri is the daughter of the chief and the tribe’s only Magian. She bears the mark of the desert, a rare trait that results in hair of the purest white, and is indicative of magical ability amongst the Mistborn tribe. But even amongst magic users she is special. Her amber eyes glow with an inner fire, and turn to the darkest black when she draws upon the magic of the desert.
After a brutal lizardman attack, Xa’Kiri gathered those she could save and fled to the safety of the ‘civilised’ lands at the words of her father. She now seeks to avenge her tribe, but must come to understand her peoples mysterious past, and her own abilities, before she can save them.
‘At night I dream of Maoris, of a time when my people were whole. The spirits of my ancestors reach out to me, they warn of a coming darkness, but also of hope. For the first time in my life, I find my people unable to return to our home. The scaled-ones seek our destruction, though I know not why. For know, we have refuge, but I made an oath to reclaim our lands for them. This is what I see in my dreams, and I must sort through the tangled ribbons of fate and forge a new life. A new life for all of us. The desert calls to me more than ever before, and fuels my magics beyond measure. I must find Maoris and seek out whatever is drawing me there, or I fear my people will drift into nothing like dust upon the wind.’
Xa’kiri has found several scrolls containing desert magic, something she once thought confined to the Shaman of the desert tribes. Recent visions have revealed to her a time when her people were once powerful archmagi, casting mighty spells from the grand city of Maoris. Now the city lies in ruins, its location unknown, and the ancient knowledge of their magic existing only as limited Shamanic lore. Xa’kiri hopes to uncover the lost knowledge of her ancestors and restore the tribes to a whole people, but also to learn more about herself, as she has the ever-growing feeling that something is not quite right…
